Summary: Congratulations to Northville and Fort Ann on both earning Co-Champions for the 2024 Class D Sectional Tournament, and congrats to Northville on advancing into the regional final with a 5-4 penalty-kick shootout result. Northville and Fort Ann have met many times in sectional play, and both schools have a long history of sectional success. Maple Hill holds the Section 2 small school record with 26 sectional championships. After Saturday’s result, Northville has the second most in section 2 with 23 titles, and Fort Ann is third with 18 titles.
On a beautiful day in Queensbury, which is an awesome site for sectional finals, the #1 seeded Falcons of Northville faced off against the #2 seeded Fort Ann Cardinals. Right from the first whistle, Northville pinned Fort Ann into their defensive end, and the pressure never ceased until the final OT whistle blew crowning co-champs for Class D in 2024. Northville’s Logan Hammons, Patrick Halloran, and Braydn Bovee controlled the middle of the field and not only started the Falcon attacks but also denied Fort Ann the opportunity to get their offense into motion. The combination play in the middle of the pitch set up McQuade Klippel and Kevin Becotte time and again, but the star of the match was the keeper for Fort Ann, Hunter Wade. He repeatedly made saves on what looked to be sure goals for Northville. In the first half, Northville had 7 out of 10 shots on frame, and Wade tallied seven saves, keeping the score knotted at zeros at halftime. The Northville defensive line limited Fort Ann to only three shots from distance, two of which Logan Armstrong was able to clean up on frame.
The second half was almost identical to the first, with Northville once again creating opportunity after opportunity for what seemed like sure goals, but the shots ended up either just wide or once again in the hands of Wade in the Cardinal nets. The Cardinals had one shot on frame in the second half.
After completing 80 minutes of soccer without a goal, the match went into sudden death OT. Thirty more minutes of soccer brought with it 7 for 11 shots from the Falcons on net and 2 for 2 for Fort Ann, but once again, no goals. At this point, the game officially ended in a tie and both Northville and Fort Ann were crowned Co-Champs. However, only one team can advance to play in regionals to earn the chance to play in states. A penalty-kick shootout was to determine who would advance. In a very tense moment for all at the site, all five shooters were required from both teams. Northville was able to put all five shots into the net to advance 5-4 on PKs, earning the right to head to Section 9 this coming Wednesday.
Congratulations to both teams in creating such an exciting final for the huge crowd base from both Fort Ann and Northville. Good luck to Northville as they travel to section IX on Wednesday to represent our section in regional play.
